Ingredients

1 lb (450 g) ziti pasta

1 lb ground beef or Italian sausage

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 small onion, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

4½–5 cups marinara sauce

1½ cups ricotta cheese

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

½ cup grated parmesan cheese

Salt and black pepper, to taste
Instructions

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the ziti 1–2 minutes less than package directions. Drain and set aside.

Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and cook until soft. Add garlic and cook briefly.

Add the ground meat and cook until browned. Season with salt and pepper.

Stir in the marinara sauce. The sauce should be slightly loose, not thick.

Add the cooked ziti to the sauce and toss until evenly coated.

Spread a thin layer of sauce in the baking dish. Add half the pasta mixture, dollop half the ricotta, and sprinkle mozzarella and parmesan.

Repeat layers with remaining pasta and cheese.

Bake uncovered for 25–30 minutes, until bubbly and lightly golden on top.

Let rest 10–15 minutes before serving.
